THE FALL VIDEO
(News date: Jan 25)

We finished the final two days filming of the promo video for The Fall on saturday. The entire thing has been filmed at the same sanitarium where we did the Ed Fielding photo shoot a few months ago. It has been by far the longest amount of filming I've done for a promo so I'm very hopeful that it's going to end up being one of the best I've made, it was certainly one of the coldest shoots I've ever been on. A lot of post production work is still to be done so it's going to be a while yet before I can show any snippets of it.

COACHELLA
(News date: Jan 21)

The line up for this years Coachella Festival in California has been announced. We will be playing Coachella on the sunday, April 18, so we are trying to put a few other West Coast gigs in to form a short mini tour. Very excited about playing live in America again. Looking forward to it.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE MERCHANDISE
(News date: Dec 11)

The entire range of merchandise that we made for the Pleasure Principle 2009 tour is now available via our On-Line Store. This includes black t-shirts, white t-shirts, hoodies, the re-released Touring Principle '79 film (now on DVD) and the DVD programme for the 2009 PP tour called 'Conversation'.

BEARCUB
(News date: Dec 11)

Many thanks for all your kind words regarding Bearcub, our beloved German Shepherd. The latest news is that he has come back from the brink slightly and is still here with us. He is in no pain at all and so we are not prolonging his life in a selfish way. He needs a lot of attention to keep him clean, pain free and happy but that is easy. Messy and a tad smelly perhaps, but easy. It's an honour to look after him after all he has given to us throughout his life. As long as he is happy he will stay here, no matter what it takes.

BBC 6 MUSIC RADIO SESSION
(News date: Dec 8)

We spent yesterday at the BBC Maida Vale studios filming and recording a radio session for BBC 6 Music. The session was a collaboration with Little Boots, the idea being that LB perform three of their songs, we perform three of ours, Victoria (Little Boots) sings on one of mine, I sing on one of hers and we do a cover of something together, so, nine songs in all. The entire day was filmed including the set up, rehearsals and performances. It included a number of interviews throughout the day and a small audience was also part of the mix.

The session will be broadcast on BBC 6 Music on Friday December 11 at 7pm. For those of you wanting a sneak preview you can see a clip of the Little Boots cover version of Lou Reeds 'Venus In Furs' track with me adding vocals and guitar. I'm told it will also be available to view on the BBC Red Button for a week from Friday 29th January 2010.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR. FINAL NIGHT
(News date: Dec 5)

The Pleasure Principle Tour is now over. A blinding night at the Indigo in the O2 Arena was a very fitting finale to such a great tour. The crowd were fantastic and, despite the band having played fifteen shows with just one day off, we were lifted by the response, all tiredness was pushed aside and show number sixteen delivered at full power. The filming was, according to the director, the best we've ever done and I will start to work on the soundtrack mixing at the end of next week. It's our intention to have the tour DVD ready for release in February.

This was a truly enjoyable tour to play. Having the opportunity to play keyboards for much of the first 50 minutes, the Pleasure Principle section, was a genuine pleasure for me. I hadn't played keyboards on those songs since they were first recorded in 1979. The transition from PP era songs to the newer stuff in the second half of the show seemed to work well, extremely well for most people. The rise in energy and power of the second half did not take away a thing from the Pleasure Principle material, but did highlight the progression from '79 to '2009 in the best way possible. For me it was a chance to showcase songs from opposite ends of my career and I was extremely happy with the response, night after night. Didn't think I'd ever be saying that a year or two ago.

In this period of recession I can only say how grateful I am that so many people came out to see the show as it moved around the country so a huge thank you to everyone that came along and made the tour such a success.

Now I move into a period of intensive studio work. We have Dead Son Rising to finish, Splinter to get written and recorded, and both albums will be released in 2010, one in Spring, one in late summer is the current plan. Even with all the studio work 2010 will be spent mainly on the road promoting those two new albums, in the UK and elsewhere. The final two days filming of the promo video for The Fall will be done before Christmas although we have yet to decide on a release date for the single. Lot's more going on which I will tell you about as soon as I can remember. Thanks again for coming along to the tour. I genuinely loved it.

INDIGO TONIGHT
(News date: Dec 3)

Just about to soundcheck at the O2. The lights look great here and everyone is very excited about the last show. I'm sad that it's coming to an end to be honest. I've really enjoyed this PP tour, far, far more than I thought I would. We've all had a fantastic time. Thank you to everyone that's come out to see the show as it's moved around the country and we will try to make sure that tonights show in London is a fitting climax to the whole thing. Hopefully with a special guest or two.

BEARCUB
(News date: Dec 2)

Just finished our show at Nottingham Rock City. I must apologise to those of you that came to the gig if I seemed a little bit distracted. This afternoon we found out that our dog, Bearcub, who has been suffering from a canine version of Multiple Sclerosis for over 18 months, has taken a very serious downturn and the vet has recommended that it would be kinder to put him to sleep. I can't tell you how much we love him. We're going home tomorrow to be with him before the show at the O2. I am sorry for not being as committed to the show this evening as I usually am.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR. DEC 1
(News date: Dec 1)

Just played Cambridge. We had a bit of a party on the bus last night and most of us didn't get up until soundcheck time so we've missed most of today. No problems with equipment this evening, everything worked. Tonight we travel to Nottingham.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR. NOV 30
(News date: Nov 30)

Last night we played in Norwich and all was well. We even managed to get out in the afternoon and see 'Law Abiding Citizen'. Tonight we played Wolverhampton where the crowd, as always here, were incredible. Totally sold out, everyone seemingly up for it from the first note, just a fantastic night. We all love coming here. Tonight we drive to Cambridge.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR. NOV 28
(News date: Nov 28)

Last night we played in Glasgow and had a great gig. The entire production went in, it was sold out and the crowd were fantastic. We were also taken out to a club afterwards for a very cool aftershow 'wind down' which gave us a rare hour or so to relax away from the tour bus.

We have just played Sunderland. A quirky venue if I'm to be completely honest but a great crowd nonetheless. We couldn't fit the big projection screen in unfortunately and Tim's amp blew up at the start of The Fall but, apart from that, it went very well. Tonight we drive down to Norwich.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR. NOV 26
(News date: Nov 26)

Yesterday was a nightmare. Our 2am ferry from Ireland was cancelled due to extremely bad weather. The 8:30am ferry that we were moved to was then delayed until 11am as the wind was so strong they couldn't move the ship away from it's berth. We didn't get back to Holyhead in Wales until about 2:30pm and then had to drive across Wales and England to Leeds, through the rush hour, and didn't arrive at the gig until about 6:30. Amazingly we were on stage and playing the set by 8:30 although Ade was still a little seasick. He's not good on the water. Unfortunately we couldn't put up any of the light show we are carrying as that would have taken another hour. The venue wanted us gone by 10pm as they had a club night afterwards. Apologies to those people that came along to see us in Leeds but I thought you had waited long enough and another hour or more to rig the lights would have been too much. Plus, the venue would have pulled us off stage after about 12 songs, at the most.

Tonight we played in Edinburgh, a city I haven't been to for many years. Not coming here has obviously been a mistake as the crowd tonight was fantastic. One of the best nights of the tour so far. Surprisingly, we had no problems at all today, probably the first trouble free day this tour has had. I hope the rest of it runs as smoothly.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR SO FAR
(News date: Nov 24)

So, just finished the show in Dublin. Great crowd. We had a fairly catastrophic failure of one of the keyboard computers during Pure (we are using three this time for various duties) which took a few minutes to sort out. Luckily the crowd were very understanding. Our trusty back-up system failed at its first challenge. That idea obviously needs a rethink. Apart from that, the tour has been amazing so far. I'm playing keyboards on most of the Pleasure Principle songs which is a lot of fun for me and I'm really enjoying myself. The PP songs sound far stronger than I thought they would, the newer songs in the second half seem to work really well, the lights (when we can fit them all in) look absolutely stunning. I'm very happy.

PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR 2009
(News date: Nov 14)

The Pleasure Principle 2009 tour rehearsals are nearly finished. I have a day in Nottingham tomorrow with Ade Fenton programming the lights and projections for the tour and then we have one final day of rehearsal on monday. After a great deal of uncertainty about how to play the Pleasure Principle songs on this tour I have decided to play them as they were originally recorded. The arrangements are the same, the sounds as close as we can get, no guitar, no loops, no industrial versions. Everything has been stripped back to the way it was in 1979. I finally decided that as it's the 30th Anniversary of the album I should celebrate the album as it was, not a heavy revamped version of it. I hope that meets with the approval of most of you. The Pleasure Principle songs take up, roughly, the first 50 minutes or so of the show. The rest will be a mix of new and old. The London show will be filmed and recorded for a special 30th Anniversary DVD.

THE FALL VIDEO
(News date: Nov 14)

We've spent some time recently filming a new promo video for The Fall which we hope to release as a single early in the new year. It now has a finished lyric and vocal (I should say 'had' actually as I changed some of the words earlier today. I'll have to redo the vocal when I get back from touring). We need another two days filming in December to finish everything off but it's already looking great.

BBC 6 MUSIC SESSION WITH LITTLE BOOTS
(News date: Nov 14)

Apologies once again for the poor rate of updates but things have been extremely busy for the last few weeks. I've done too many interviews to mention but I will try to let you know when they are being published or broadcast. I have a 'live combo' radio session with Little Boots coming up soon for BBC 6 Music and subscribers to our Numind database will soon be able to enter a competition to win tickets for the recording.

TONY WEBB
(News date: Oct 9)

After 30 years at the helm my Dad has decided to retire from management. I couldn't begin to tell you how important a part he has played in keeping my career going and it feels very strange not having him involved. Still, as he nears his 73rd birthday, no-one can say he hasn't worked hard enough, or for long enough. He has earned his retirement many times over. I owe him more than I can ever say.

Things are slightly chaotic at the moment as we, Ade Fenton, Steve Malins and myself, try to take over the reigns and I hope you will be patient with us if our communication with you is not as good as you have come to expect. I will try harder to make sure this web site is kept up to date and as much information as you need is posted on these pages.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE ALBUM
(News date: Oct 9)

Reaction to the 30th Anniversary Edition of The Pleasure Principle album has been fantastic. The Pleasure Principle was made the 'Must-Have' Re-issue in this week's The Sunday Times this weekend and has been having great reviews:

  • 'Numan's reputation has been restored lately. He's finally been recognised as an important and influential figure. Numan's importance lies in his ability to slap an earth-quaking hook on top of his glacial synths ('Cars' being the definitive example), and therefore join the dots between Kraftwerk, Bowie and Eno on one side and the rise of synth-pop, techno and industrial music on the other.'
THE SUNDAY TIMES (MUST HAVE RE-ISSUE OF THE WEEK)

  • 'What makes it so successful is its perfect fusion of electronics with more traditional elements as in the beautiful melody of 'Complex' - the first ballad of electronica, a weave of violin, viola and Moog - or 'Films', its propulsive drum and electric bass figures set against washes of bleak synthetics. Much sampled, much admired, it is an album full of astonishing ideas.'
    5/5 MOJO

  • 'Practically opening the door, making the bed sheets and brewing the coffee for Depeche Mode, it features 'Cars' - which we all know, and 'M.E.' - which we also know because it's the signature riff from Basement Jaxx's 'Where's Your Head At'. An utter thrill.'
    5/5 ART ROCKER

  • 'For once, here's a much-hyped album which deserves the hype. Gary Numan's third record was the Year Zero of big-selling synth-pop, though 'pop' is far too light a word for a sound that scared the crap out of spotty teenagers worldwide. The Pleasure Principle left people chilled to the core with its deathly-cold combination of Moog bass, digital bass and Numan's numb, robotic vocals. After listening to 'Cars', 'Films', 'Metal' or 'Engineers', you could well believe that guitar music was finished for ever. There's not a duff track on here. High recommended.'
    4/5 RECORD COLLECTOR

  • 'Numan's shard of cyborg malaise is 30 years-old; dispassionate hymns from an industrial Brave New World, this is one of the first electronic records to sound digital as opposed to merely synthesized.'
    4/5 UNCUT MAGAZINE

  • 'It's often forgotten that this was electronic music's commercial breakthrough. The singularity of tone-dystopian sci-fi and icy-synths still emanates Ballard-esque alienation, especially on deadpan single 'Cars'.'
    4/5 Q MAGAZINE

  • 'Numan's huge influence still remains. If you don't already own this album, there's no better time to grab a copy.'
    FUTURE MUSIC

Gary is also one of the artists featured in the BBC4 documentary, 'Synth Britannia', which airs on Friday October 16 and there's an article in this week's Total TV Guide Magazine. He has also recently been interviewed by the The Times (in the Saturday Playlist section), NME, Daily Telegraph, Telegraph on-line, FHM, The Quietus, Glass Magazine, Scotland On Sunday, Music OMH, Drowned In Sound, by Johnnie Walker on Radio 2, Radio 4 for a show about electronic music due in the new year and BBC 6 Music for a programme scheduled to be aired on October 17.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE TOUR
(News date: Oct 9)

The Pleasure Principle tour is now less than six weeks away. I can't promise anything but I will try to get a guest or two to pop up once in a while as the tour progresses. Dirty Harry are now confirmed as the support band for the tour. Harry played many, if not all, of the other UK Numan shows this year. As many of you have probably already figured out the total amount of Pleasure Principle music comes to about 50 minutes. So, I'm likely to play the show in two halves, a Pleasure Principle set, plus a second set which will be more of a mixture of other older songs, some obscure, some not so obscure, and as many brand new songs as I can write between now and then. I hate making claims about how good the lighting will be as the venues themselves vary enormously and will dictate at times what we can load in. However, we are hoping to bring some things we've never used before which, in the factory at least, look amazing.

With this tour our usual CD audio programme is going to become a DVD programme called 'Conversation'. It will be more like a mini documentary film about the making of the original album and tour and many other things relevant to that time.

We will also have available the DVD version of the original Touring Principle video, called The Touring Principle 1979 - (30th Anniversary Edition). This DVD includes the original version that was swamped in special video effects, plus a new version with those effects removed. It also features an interview with me.

Obviously we also intend to film the tour at some point. That DVD will be called The Pleasure Principle 2009.

THE FALL VIDEO
(News date: Oct 9)

We've been thinking about releasing a version of The Fall as a single. Not sure when exactly but we will be making a promo video for it later this month.

NINE INCH NAILS
(News date: Oct 9)

Two film clips of Gary performing Metal and Cars with Nine Inch Nails at the O2 Arena in London earlier this year have now been posted on to the Nine Inch Nails web site.

CHICANE
(News date: Oct 9)

The new Chicane single, Hiding All The Stars, which uses samples from the Numan song Cars, will be released on October 19.

NINE INCH NAILS AT THE O2
(News date: Jul 20)

I'm sure many of you know about this already but I was a 'surprise' guest of Nine Inch Nails at their London O2 Arena show last wednesday. They have been playing 'Metal' throughout their recent tour, which apparently may be their last tour ever, so I was particullary proud to be a guest at such an event. The fact that they also played Cars and that Trent Reznor wanted me to sing all the vocals plus play some keyboards was just an honour. The warmth of the band and crew throughout the day, and of the audience during the show was quite special. It will stay with me for a long time. My thanks to Trent, the band, the crew and to the O2 crowd that night. As I said, it was an honour.

I hope to get hold of some good photos in the near future but, in the meantime, here's a slightly dodgy one. There are numerous clips of the show and the 'Metal/Cars' section on YouTube. Just go there and explore. Better still, check out the entire gig, it was truly amazing.

I'm sorry I couldn't let anyone know it was going to happen but I'm afraid 'surprise' guest means just that. Most importantly, my thanks to my wife Gemma for getting the whole thing up and running in the first place.

NO SAINTS/NO SINNERS
(News date: Jul 20)

The No Saints Festival in Belgium in November has changed it's name to the Sinners Day Festival. For more information you can go the Tour Dates page or to the Sinners Day web site.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE BONUS ALBUM
(News date: Jul 14)

A short clip of 'Metal' has just been uploaded onto the Gary Numan My Space page and is taken from the bonus live album: 1979 - The Live Eps. Only a limited number of copies of this album will be pressed up as it will ONLY be available through the Official Gary Numan On-Line Store as a bonus album with the new 30th Anniversary edition of The Pleasure Principle. This exclusive pre-order is up now and the album will be released, along with the Pleasure Principle, on 21st September. The EP mixes appear to be an idea that Gary was working on in 1979 but eventually abandoned. Intriguingly some of them - including 'Metal' are mixed as if they're new studio versions, including a complete lack of crowd noise. You can also hear the 'Metal' clip on the Nu Music page of this web site.

THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE SPECIAL EDITION
(News date: Jul 12)

As many of you are no doubt already aware Beggars Banquet are releasing a special Expanded Edition of 'The Pleasure Principle' album to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album's original release. You can now pre-order this double CD edition of 'The Pleasure Principle', which is now widely regarded as a classic, influential album, from our On-Line Store, 30 years after it debuted at Number 1 in the UK charts. This special edition features demos and B-sides on the bonus disc. In addition to this, and exclusive to NuWorld, is a bonus live album, 'Gary Numan: 1979 - The Live Eps', which features never-heard-before mixes taken from the original analogue tapes for two Live EPs in 1979 and 1980 - neither of which were ever released. The album also features Gary's original mixes for the vinyl edition of 'Living Ornaments 1979'. This live album will only be available through NuWorld as part of a multi-buy package with 'The Pleasure Principle'. When you pre-order these albums you will also receive a free audio download of 'Conversation' (Demo Version 1), one of the demo tracks from the new 30th anniversary edition of 'The Pleasure Principle'.

PHOTO SHOOT
(News date: Apr 8)

I had a great photo shoot recently with photographer Ed Fielding in a disused asylum in Lincolnshire. An amazing place in more ways than one. These shots will be used for the new Dead Son Rising album as well as the Fenton/Numan DJ partnership.

NuWorld is hosted by USP Networks
